Course Description (HRE20):
Description/Rationale
This course examines the relationship between the person and message of Christ and the dominant attitudes of contemporary culture. Central to this course is the sacramental nature of Jesus and through His incarnation, the sacramentality of the Catholic Church, persons, and all of creation. Beginning with students’ own life experiences, seen in light of the Gospel narratives, students acquire a deeper and more systematic knowledge of Christ, his message, and his Church. Connections between the Church and contemporary culture are explored in terms of what it means to be a responsible adolescent developing as a member of a Catholic, Christian community while living within the context of a secular society. In the Family Life Education strand, students explore a variety of topics related to the themes of person-hood, interpersonal relationships, and sexuality. Students have the opportunity to experience first-hand the call and response to Christian Community Service.
The fundamental premise of this course is that both teacher and students are discerning believers formed in the Catholic faith tradition, intent on participating in the transformation of society. Understanding that the students operate from, and yearn to deepen their spirituality, this course encourages students to articulate Catholic beliefs, and to continue to journey as reflective, creative thinkers. By raising important questions about their faith, this course leads students to a deeper understanding of their relationship with God and neighbour. The students are called to be caring family members and responsible citizens who respect and understand the history, cultural heritage, and pluralism of today’s contemporary society. Each student will sign out a textbook at the beginning of the course. It is your responsibility to bring it to class each day and return it in good condition. Texts must be returned before completing the final evaluation: otherwise, there will be a replacement cost incurred.

Keys to Success:
1. Notes: It is the student’s responsibility to have a complete set of notes and handouts. Binders need to be well organized.
2. Students will be expected to complete homework activities regularly.
3. Students will be expected to complete: Tests / Quizzes / Assignments / Independent Study Units (ISU) / Prayer Service.
In keeping with the directives from the Ministry of Education and its "culture of responsibility", late assignments will not be accepted for evaluation unless, under extenuating circumstances, arrangements have been made with the teacher prior to the due date.
4.Absenteeism and Lateness:
Attendance is a vital component in all courses. If an absence cannot be avoided, the student is responsible for any activities, notes, assignments, homework, or other activity that occurred on that day. If a test/quiz/assignment will be missed, students must let Mr. Kirby know prior to the date so arrangements can be made. Under extenuating circumstances quizzes/tests/assignments will be due the first day back, with a valid reason.
Rules:
Students are expected to come to class on time and be prepared (bring all class materials).
Students are expected to show respect to peers and staff.
No food or drink in classroom (except for water).
Do not pack up early.
Do not line up at the door.
Obey the seating plan that you are given
Students who are out of dress code or disruptive in class will be asked to leave and a mark of zero may be recorded for any test, quiz, assignment that a student misses.
